Understand the spirit, philosophy, tradition, and discipline
of Japanese calligraphy. Learn hiragana (Japanese script) and kanji
(Chinese characters), techniques of the oriental brush, and correct
posture. View and discuss great works of calligraphy of the past and
present. Enjoy the creative expression of calligraphy and tranquillity
of meditation.

*All the tuition includes 6 month
membership to NIHON SHUJI (Japan Calligraphy Education Foundation). As
a member, your work will be sent to Japan during the session to be
graded and critiqued by master calligraphers from NIHON SHUJI. Members
will receive 6 monthly texts and also be invited to all Kampo Cultural
Center events which involve calligraphy study and research.
Both classes are for beginners through advanced and taught by
Mr. Tsuyoshi Takemori, a fifth rank instructor in shodo or calligraphy
who received his degree from Japan's premiere calligraphy academy, the
Japan Calligraphy Education Foundation. Mr. Takemori has over
twenty-five years of experience in the field, and has taught at the
University of Rochester and at the Gannet School of Arts and Sciences
at the Rochester Museum of Man and Science. He has also demonstrated
calligraphy at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Asia Society in New York
and throughout the United States.
Calligraphy materials are on sale at Kampo Cultural Center.

Nihon Shuji Calligraphy Correspondence Program
Those persons who would like to study Japanese calligraphy but are
unable to attend classes may participate in Nihon Shuji's
Correspondence Program. As a correspondence member of Nihon Shuji (The
Japan Calligraphy Education Foundation), you will receive a monthly
calligraphy text and assignment from Japan to be submitted at the end
of the month. Your work will be sent to Nihon Shuji's Educational
Headquarters where it will be evaluated and graded and sent back to you
early the next month.
The fee schedule for the Correspondence program is as
follows:
